We need to seriously and fervently petition God in behalf of our nation and then with godly lives reach out with the gospel truth whenever an opportunity is presented (1Tim.2:1-4; 1Pet.3:15). We must never forget that every nation and world power in the past that left God and went against him sinning as we do today (fornication, homosexuality, pornography, abortion, nudity, alcohol, racism, gambling, greed, hate, polytheism, etc.) has fallen. Every single one is gone. Where are Sodom and Gomorrah and their wickedness now? Where are the ancient world powers of Greece, Rome, and Babylon who embraced and participated in same-sex relations and other wickedness now? They have been eradicated and their sin extinguished. God no longer allows nations to somewhat walk in their own ways (Acts 14:16). “And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent” (Acts 17:30; cf. 2Pet.3:9).
Folks today foolishly believe that what happened to the wicked civilizations in the past, cannot and will not, happen to us. But they either need a history lesson or a lesson in how to open one’s eyes. An honest glance at recent events seems to suggest that America is ready for a divine whipping. Sin is committed at every level of authority. People follow celebrities rather than God. Churches proclaim a gospel of man. Now, we seem to be a fight away from a race war, a vote away from civil war, a click away from nuclear war, and the antagonism of all the wars is emanating from our highest office. “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people”(Pr.14:34).
We have become a modern day Sodom. Have we forgotten that God’s punishment on them is an example for us today? (Rom.15:4; 2Pet.2:6; Jude 7). Be warned that heaven’s punishment is on its way if this nation does not do like Nineveh did and repent (Jonah 3:4-10). The day will come when America as we know it will no longer exist. So, what can the righteous do? Pray, keep living right, and evangelize (Acts 5:42; 8:4). For ten precious righteous souls, God would have spared Sodom and given them more time (Gen.18:32; Ps.33:12).
